Truffle Seminar: 11.00am - 12.00pm Sat 20 June and Sun 21 June, 2009
Cafe Lerida: Lunch served 11.30-3.30, Truffle dishes on the menu
Canberra has become known in the last couple of years as the home of some very high quality black truffles (no, not chocolates!). To celebrate the opening of the Truffle season and to show how good our local truffles are, quite a number of restaurants and other eateries around the region will be offering special truffle dishes and doing other truffle-related things (see: http://www.trufflefestival.com.au/sponsors/ )
At Lerida Estate will be hosting a short seminar on truffles: their history, what kinds there are, where do they grow, how are they used in various dishes. The presenter of this seminar will be Master Chef Christophe Gregoire from Le Tres Bon Restaurant in Bungendore. After the seminar you may want to stay for lunch and have one of the truffle dishes that we will be serving in Cafe Lerida - including the Black Truffle pasta dish that was very popular last year.
Bookings: 02 6295 6640 or wine@leridaestate.com
Cost for Seminar $10 per head; Cost for dishes in Café Lerida as per menu.

Current Activities
Come and Play Petanque!
Lerida Estate recently constructed a major Petanque
facility on the Federal Highway at Lake George with 26 international
standard pistes, designed by Canberra-based landscape architect
and golf course expert, Jamie Dawson of Enviro Links. On 30 September
2007, Lerida hosted its first major tournament; a doubles competition
for a perpetual trophy. More than 150 players from 3 States and
overseas participated, including some world-class professionals.

If you want to find out why Petanque, normally associated
with sleepy village squares on a warm Sunday afternoon, is one of
the fastest growing participant sports in the world, take a trip
to the Collector end of Lake George and see what it is all about
(see www.leridaestate.com/events.html for details).

Disabled Suffer No Disadvantage
Petanque is distinct from its many related games, bocce (Italy),
bolas (Spain), klootschieten (Holland), kubb (Sweden), lawn bowls
(England) etc, being specifically designed to allow the wheelchair
bound to compete on equal terms with the more mobile. The name derives
from the Provencal term pés tanqées, in English,
stuck feet, as the game requires the player to throw with their
feet together inside a 25 cm circle.
The conventional form of Petanque is one of the few completely
inclusive outdoor games, allowing people of all ages and degrees
of mobility to play together in a game that can be a simple recreation
or an international World Cup standard event.
Even in the gentle form to be played at Lerida, the game can be
very thrilling, appealing to the fiercely competitive as well as
the more contemplative. Enthusiasts can spend more than $150 each
on specialised boules made of exotic alloys, designed to shoot opponents’
equipment out of play. However, for the hundreds of millions of
backyard players around the world (17 million in France alone) equipment
can cost as little a $13 for a set of steel balls, a jack and a
measuring string. Most sports warehouses carry cheap sets.
Generally tournaments at Lerida Estate are open to all classes
of equipment. Occasionally however, more specialised gear for official
tournaments will be required. Participants will be advised beforehand
if this is the case.
Environmentally Friendly
The maintenance of golf courses, ovals and lawn bowling greens requires
thousands of litres of water, fertilizer and fossil fuel powered
equipment. There is no such requirement with Petanque, which may
be played on any level surface.
The requirements for recognition as an international standard venue
have lead Lerida to seek out the special fine gravel seen in French
village market squares or the increasingly common indoor arenas,
known as Boulodromes.
The whole complex will eventually be landscaped extensively with
picnic facilities and local plants selected for their hardiness
and low water needs. It will be available for all forms of boules,
including bocce and bolas, also popular in Australia.
Local club competitions are now held on the last Saturday of each
month at Lerida Estate. The next major tournament planned for 2008
is over the Anzac Day long weekend, Friday 25th and Saturday 26th
April.

Lake George Vineyards Walk
Experience the beauty of Lake George and get some exercise at the
same time. Walk from Lerida Estate, above the vineyard of Lake George
Wines, down past the restaurant (formerly Madews, now owned by Lake
George Wines) and back to Lerida Estate along the road. The round
trip is approximately 1.5 km.
Walkers can do the walk any time during the opening hours of the
two wineries. Opening hours are different for the different wineries.
Lerida Estate is open 7 days a week from 10 – 5. Lake George
Wines are currently only open by appointment, so let us know if
you would like to do the walk and we will try to arange it for you.
It is essential to wear walking shoes. This can be runners –
but the shoes should have good gripping soles because some of the
terrain can be a bit steep. If you want to see the great views of
Lake George, you need to go up the hill a bit. The walk will be
signposted, so just follow the arrows. Also, pick up a map from
Lerida which shows you the route to take and gives you some notes
on what you will see on the walk.
If you are doing the walk on the weekend or a public holiday, why
don't you plan to have lunch at Cafe Lerida (see menu above)
Contact: Anne or Jim, Lerida Estate on 6295 6640
or 0412 262 321/0419 246 149.
Cost: No charge for walk.

Pugsley Buzzard at Lerida
Estate
Saturday 7th February, 2009
12.30-3.30pm
For the third consecutive year, Lerida Estate Winery
hosted a special wine, food and blues event before the official
Australian Blues Music Festival held in Goulburn between 12-15 February.
The Lerida event featured a one-off performance by Pugsley Buzzard
on Saturday 7th February.

Pugsley Buzzard is a talented piano player and singer. His performances
draw from a rich vein of piano based music from Harlem Stride, New
Orleans Funk, Swampshack Jazz, Barrelhouse Blues to Modern Improvisations.
Pugsley`s sound has has been compared to Fats Waller, Tom Waits,
Captain Beefheart and Professor Longhair. An engaging performer,
his shows are exciting and entertaining and delivered with a vaudevillian
nuance and humour.
Performance was free however, tables are reserved for visitors
who order meals.
