Christmas Lunch at Lerida
Estate
Sunday 21st December
Come and join in the Festive
Spirit with a special Christmas menu. More details coming soon...
Current Activities
Come and Play Petanque!
Lerida Estate recently constructed a major Petanque
facility on the Federal Highway at Lake George with 26 international
standard pistes, designed by Canberra-based landscape architect
and golf course expert, Jamie Dawson of Enviro Links. On 30 September
2007, Lerida hosted its first major tournament; a doubles competition
for a perpetual trophy. More than 150 players from 3 States and
overseas participated, including some world-class professionals.

If you want to find out why Petanque, normally associated
with sleepy village squares on a warm Sunday afternoon, is one of
the fastest growing participant sports in the world, take a trip
to the Collector end of Lake George and see what it is all about
(see www.leridaestate.com/events.html for details).

Disabled Suffer No Disadvantage
Petanque is distinct from its many related games, bocce (Italy),
bolas (Spain), klootschieten (Holland), kubb (Sweden), lawn bowls
(England) etc, being specifically designed to allow the wheelchair
bound to compete on equal terms with the more mobile. The name derives
from the Provencal term pés tanqées, in English,
stuck feet, as the game requires the player to throw with their
feet together inside a 25 cm circle.
The conventional form of Petanque is one of the few completely
inclusive outdoor games, allowing people of all ages and degrees
of mobility to play together in a game that can be a simple recreation
or an international World Cup standard event.
Even in the gentle form to be played at Lerida, the game can be
very thrilling, appealing to the fiercely competitive as well as
the more contemplative. Enthusiasts can spend more than $150 each
on specialised boules made of exotic alloys, designed to shoot opponents’
equipment out of play. However, for the hundreds of millions of
backyard players around the world (17 million in France alone) equipment
can cost as little a $13 for a set of steel balls, a jack and a
measuring string. Most sports warehouses carry cheap sets.
Generally tournaments at Lerida Estate are open to all classes
of equipment. Occasionally however, more specialised gear for official
tournaments will be required. Participants will be advised beforehand
if this is the case.
Environmentally Friendly
The maintenance of golf courses, ovals and lawn bowling greens requires
thousands of litres of water, fertilizer and fossil fuel powered
equipment. There is no such requirement with Petanque, which may
be played on any level surface.
The requirements for recognition as an international standard venue
have lead Lerida to seek out the special fine gravel seen in French
village market squares or the increasingly common indoor arenas,
known as Boulodromes.
The whole complex will eventually be landscaped extensively with
picnic facilities and local plants selected for their hardiness
and low water needs. It will be available for all forms of boules,
including bocce and bolas, also popular in Australia.
Local club competitions are now held on the last Saturday of each
month at Lerida Estate. The next major tournament planned for 2008
is over the Anzac Day long weekend, Friday 25th and Saturday 26th
April.

Lake George Vineyards Walk
Experience the beauty of Lake George and get some exercise at the
same time. Walk from Lerida Estate, above the vineyard of Lake George
Wines, down past the restaurant (formerly Madews, now owned by Lake
George Wines) and back to Lerida Estate along the road. The round
trip is approximately 1.5 km.
Walkers can do the walk any time during the opening hours of the
two wineries. Opening hours are different for the different wineries.
Lerida Estate is open 7 days a week from 10 – 5. Lake George
Wines are currently only open by appointment, so let us know if
you would like to do the walk and we will try to arange it for you.
It is essential to wear walking shoes. This can be runners –
but the shoes should have good gripping soles because some of the
terrain can be a bit steep. If you want to see the great views of
Lake George, you need to go up the hill a bit. The walk will be
signposted, so just follow the arrows. Also, pick up a map from
Lerida which shows you the route to take and gives you some notes
on what you will see on the walk.
And if you are doing the walk on the weekend or a public holiday,
why don't you plan to have lunch at Cafe Lerida (see menu above)
Contact: Anne or Jim, Lerida Estate on 6295 6640
or 0412 262 321/0419 246 149.
Cost: No charge for walk.

The Fireside Festival at
Lerida Estate
Canberra and Capital Region
August 2008
Indulge in cozy fireside festival
experiences this winter.
"Sip on exquisite cool climate wines, taste the
delicacies from the region, meet local artists with a passion for
their craft, or just relax and warm yourself on open fires while
you listen to fine music and talk amongst your friends..."
This year Lerida Estate participated in the Fireside Festival
and we had a great program of activities during the festival month
of August.
Lerida Estate, Wine Partner of the Canberra Symphony Orchestra,
hosted 5 concerts featuring musicians from the CSO. The concerts
were held in the barrel room and music featured included classical,
light jazz, Latin American, rock favourites from the 60’s
and 70’s, café style from Gershwin, Porter and Piazzolla,
to moments from the French film Amélie. There was definitely
something for everyone on the diverse program.

Each concert included an interval to enjoy canapés matched
with Lerida Estate wine. At the end of the concert, guests were
treated to hot chocolate, Jim’s mulled wine, tea or coffee,
with roasted chestnuts and Petit Fours. The musicians joined guests
during the interval and at the end of the concert, to answer questions
from those who attended.

Cheese/Wine Master Class
Lerida Estate Barrel Room
Sunday 13 July 2008, 3 - 4.30pm
What an exciting food and wine matching experience!
Lerida Estate was pleased to host its second cheese/wine master
class in the barrel room at their winery at Lake George. The following
five wines were matched with an Australian or imported cheese:
• 2007 Pinot Rosé
• 2007 Pinot Gris
• 2006 Pinot Noir
• 2005 Merlot
• 2007 Botrytis Pinot Gris
To assist in your personal exploration, Shelley Thomson (owner
of Manuka Fine Foods) and Shari Blumer (chef at Manuka Fine Foods)
explained cheese-making techniques, what they suggest you eat with
cheese and most importantly, what wine they suggest you might drink
with them. Jim Lumbers, owner of Lerida Estate with his wife Anne,
discussed Lerida’s winemaking styles and techniques and what
wines he considers a suitable to match for the respective cheeses.
Guests had the opportunity to assess how the respective wines went
with the cheeses.
The Cheese Room at Manuka Fine Foods (formerly Jones the Grocer)
in Manuka has the best selection of Australian and foreign cheeses
in the ACT. Lerida Estate makes some of the finest wines in the
Canberra District.

Saturday 2nd & Sunday
3rd February 2008
For the second year in a row, Lerida Estate presented top Blues
musicians as the lead in to the Australian Blues Music Festival
in Goulburn. This special pre-festival wine, food and blues event
featured a one-off performance by Brian Fraser with special guest
Mick Reid on Saturday 2 February, 12.30-3.30. And back by popular
demand were Pete and the Pelicans who performed on Sunday 3 February
12.30 -3.30.
The Australian Blues Music Festival is held on the second weekend
of February every year (in 2008 from 7- 10 February). The Festival's
reputation as the National Festival of Australian Blues Music has
attracted the widespread support of the Australian blues music industry.
See below for more details on each artist.
Brian Fraser with special
guest Mick Reid
Saturday 2nd February 12.30pm - 3.30pm
Geelong's Brian Fraser is one of Australia's finest and most well-known
acoustic blues performers. He is the recipient of numerous awards
and with over 30 years' experience in the industry, his hectic schedule
includes spending many months of every year touring the country
playing his own brand of stomp board driven blues, amazing his audiences
with his guitar talents, his humorous story-telling, performing
both his own material and quirky covers. Brian has released seven
CD's including "Passing the Time" with the 2006 Australian
Music Blues 'Chain Award' Group of the Year, The Brian Fraser Trio.
Brian will be joined by special guest harmonica master, Mick Reid.

Pete and the Pelicans
Sunday 3rd February 12.30pm - 3.30pm
Pete and the Pelicans are a three piece group from the ACT. Formed
at the National Folk Festival in 2006, they have a fast paced and
frantic style, with swampy electric guitar and howling harmonica.
Their influences range from Muddy Waters to Bob Dylan and Nick Cave,
and their songs cover all the old blues subjects, from love songs
to dark murder ballads.
